Surface modification

In order to develop new, reliable, efficient, and multifunctional microfluidic components, the precise control and manipulation of the surface properties of the material is essential. Surface modification uses various (bio)chemical and physical processes to modify the material properties, without altering their bulk characteristics. Micronit offers various solutions to achieve (localized) surface modification, as the application of coatings and deposition of biomaterials. For the spotting of reagents, see our reagent integration page.

Coatings for surface modification

Material coatings play a vital role in achieving the required anti-stiction, antifouling, and protective properties of a material. Hydrophilic/hydrophobic coatings are critical in reaching the right contact angle of the fluids and help to control the wettability of the surface, which is important for capillary flow control.

Passivation of the chip material protects the key sample constituents from reacting with the chip material. Especially in molecular diagnostics (bioassays), passivation of the surface material is a vital surface modification step.

Deposition of biomaterials

Deposition of biocompatible, bioselective or biorepellent layers is often required in assays that involve biological materials. Immobilization of certain molecules can be achieved through biological separation/purification techniques. The surface is functionalized with sensor molecules that bind the molecules of interest (for example antibody/nucleic acid probes). There is a huge diversity in possibilities, that allow for the ‘capture’ of for example antibodies, DNA, proteins, cells, aptamers, catalytic, and redox-active units.

At Micronit, we offer the surface modification technologies that your project needs! Modification can be conducted both locally or on the entire surface. We are experienced in working with various materials and hybrids.

The benefits of working with us:

  • One development partner that can apply your critical deposition and modification properties.
  • Specialized team to assist your R&D team.
  • Scalable processes, from development to manufacturing.

We are looking forward to hearing all about your specific surface modification challenges.
