A microfluidic platform as a manageable building block


At the Microtas 2018 conference, Anke Vollertsen and Stefan Dekker won a poster price. Anke en Stefan currently work at the BIOS Lab-on-a-chip group of the University of Twente. Their poster titled ‘Standardized, Modular Parallelization Platform for Microfluidic Large-Scale Integration Cell Culturing Chips’, was nominated out of a total of 700 presented posters.


The poster describes three modular microfluidic chips that are placed in parallel on a platform. Each chip contains 64 microchambers for cell culturing. Together, the chips combine 192 independently addressable chambers in total. Over 2300 valves are controlled through the platform. This way, high throughput cell culturing and biological expertise are combined, which facilitates high throughput screening.


The platform itself can be considered as a microfluidic building block that, by means of standardisation, creates the possibility to be extended with more similar platforms. By making this complex technology modular, it becomes more manageable. Furthermore, it brings about the feasibility to build a larger platform that performs a microfluidic function.


The given level of standardisation paves the way for large scale commercial realisation of microfluidic technology. Micronit, provider of the base of the fluidic platform, is excited to see the gap between lab and fab tightened. By granting this poster with a prize, the international community is deservedly acknowledging the importance of this process.
