“I keep learning, whilst at the same time looking for solutions to problems affecting microfluidics research.”

A need for commonly accepted tools
“During my PhD I put a lot of energy into trying to fix common microfluidics problems and after discussing these problems with colleagues in the field, I got convinced that there’s a need for shared and commonly accepted tools to assist researchers. So I started to look for a place where I could develop these tools while remaining in contact with biological research, and Micronit was such a place. After finishing my PhD, I officially joined the R&D team.”

Developing new technologies
“Here I’m part of the strategic R&D department as a scientist. Our focus is on developing new technologies. This requires keeping up with research and the ability to try and forecast what the needs will be in the medium and long term. We work in close collaboration with customers from all over the world, whom I sometimes visit to get a better picture of the device they’re looking for and environment they work in. Also, we’re part of many research projects which makes me feel like I’m part of a huge team, consisting of several groups that are excellent in their own research area. This way I keep learning, whilst at the same time looking for solutions to problems affecting microfluidics research.”

Need for challenge
“Micronit’s dynamic approach really appeals to me, because I need to feel challenged. That’s also one of the reasons why I applied here - the company’s vision. Micronit is not just a manufacturing company, it also has a large R&D department.”

The place I needed to be
“Mine is a very international department, where I found friends as well as colleagues. The next challenge is to absorb the language and culture, which we’re working on together. Quoting Douglas Adams, “The Netherlands isn’t the place I thought I’d be, but I think it’s the place I need to be.”
