Glass Microneedles

NeuroprobesWithin the scope of the European Neuroprobes FP6 project, Micronit is working on the development of glass microneedles with microfluidic channels and electrode arrays.

Neuroprobes
The aim of the Neuroprobes project is to develop a system platform for better understanding of the human brain, and for treatment of associated diseases. The proposed work will enable a new integrated tool that combines multiple functions to allow electrical recording and stimulation as well as chemical sensing and stimulation.

Prototype
SEM Glass MicroneedlesThe first prototype is an array of 10 glass needles with a length of 4 mm and 9 mm (175 µm thick).

In the upcoming period a test batch of microneedle arrays with integrated microfluidic channels will be manufactured. The next step is to deposit electrode arrays on the surface of the needles. Needle arrays will be stacked to obtain arrays of up to 10 x 10 individually addressable microneedles.

The Neuroprobes IP project is partially funded by the European Union within the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).
