Droplet Generators

 Monodisperse Emulsion

Microfluidic droplet generators are excellent tools for generating highly reproducible microsized droplets with much higher precision and repeatability compared to conventional methods.

By tuning the relative viscosities, surface tension, and velocities between the dispersed and the continuous phase droplets of almost any size can be created. Oil-in-water (O/W) droplets can be generated directly using the glass chips. Water-in-oil droplets (W/O) are best formed in hydrophobic channels (coated glass). This to prevent droplets from sticking to the channel walls. Upon request Micronit can coat chips with an hydrophobic anti-stiction coating.

In life-sciences and chemistry droplet generators are used to make highly monodisperse emulsions, synthesizing particles, encapsulating biological entities, or generate picoliter-sized microreactors.

kEY FEATURES
Micronit offers two types of droplet generators commonly used in research environments.

  • The Focussed-Flow Droplet Generator chip. In this design the continuous phase is used for shearing the dispersed phase which then breaks up in droplets. The micrometer-sized highly precise restriction etched by Micronit in the droplet generator chips ensure controlled and repeatable droplet snap-off.

  • The T-Shaped Droplet Generator chip. In this design two channels intersect with a local restriction at the junction. As the dispersed phase is forced trough the junction the shear force generated by the continuous phase elongates the dispersed phase which leads to droplet formation.

The droplet generator chips are made of borosilicate glass and are delivered in the Fluidic Slide to be compatible with the Fluidic Connect 4515 chip holder.

Typical droplet sizes generated are 10-70µm.
